【国際コース】　クラーク生が小学校の英語教育をもっと楽しく！　～自分たちで考えた授業を実際に小学校で実施します～

　国際コースのProject Learning（プロジェクト学習）の授業で、あるグループの生徒たちが、小学校の教育、特に外国語学習をもっと楽しく、興味を持って学べるものにするにはどうしたらよいかをテーマに探究活動を行っています。

　生徒たちはこれまで、世界各地のさまざまな教育方法について調べてきました。北欧で行われているアクティブラーニングの活動や、コスタリカの学校で行われているフィールドワークなど、世界には日本とは異なるさまざまな教育のスタイルがあります。生徒たちはこうした海外の事例から多くのことを学び、自分たちの授業づくりに生かしてきました。

　そして今回、生徒たちが考えたのは、小学生が英語で「買い物」を体験しながら学ぶ授業です！

　授業では、子どもたちがアイスクリーム屋さんを訪れ、英語を使ってアイスクリームを注文します。しかも、普通のアイスクリームではありません！楽しくてちょっと変わったフレーバーを用意し、楽しみながら「英語で買い物をする」体験ができる活動を考えました。
そして、このプロジェクトのすごいところは、授業を考えて終わりではないことです。

　生徒たちは自分たちで地域の小学校に連絡を取り、実際に小学4年生全員を対象として、この授業を行う許可をいただきました！

　今日は、授業実施に向けてクラーク生が小学校を訪問し、教務主任の先生と外国語担当の先生と打ち合わせを行いました。実際の小学校の先生方からアドバイスをいただきながら、授業の内容や活動の進め方について話し合い、より良い授業にするために計画をさらにブラッシュアップしました。とても有意義な打ち合わせとなり、生徒たちも「早く実際の教室で授業をしてみたい！」と、ますます楽しみになった様子です。

　世界の教育について学び、そこからアイデアを得て、自分たちで新しい授業を考え、そして実際に小学校の教室で実践する。クラークのProject Learningでは、生徒たちが教室の中だけで学ぶのではなく、実際の社会とつながりながら、自分たちの力で課題の解決に挑戦しています。高校生のアイデアが、これからの日本の教育を少しずつ変えていく——。そんな挑戦を続ける生徒たちの授業が、今からとても楽しみです！

In our Project Learning class, a group of Clark students is researching ways to make elementary school education—especially foreign language learning—more interesting and engaging for children. As part of their research, the students have explored a variety of innovative educational approaches from around the world. They have learned about active learning activities used in Northern Europe, visited schools and researched field-based learning in Costa Rica, and discovered many other exciting approaches to education from around the globe.

Using what they have learned, the students designed their own English lesson aimed at helping elementary school students learn practical English for shopping and buying things. To make the lesson fun and memorable, they created an activity in which the elementary school students visit an imaginary ice-cream stand and practice buying ice cream using English. And, of course, the ice cream flavors are fun and unusual! But the most exciting part of this project is that the students didn’t stop at designing the lesson. They contacted a local elementary school and received permission to actually teach their class to all of the school’s fourth-grade students!

Today, the Clark students visited the elementary school to meet with the Academic Coordinator and the Foreign Language Coordinator. Together, they discussed the lesson plan and worked on refining the activities to make the class as effective and enjoyable as possible. It was a great meeting, and our Clark students are now extremely excited to get into the classroom and put their ideas into action. It is amazing to see our high school students take ideas they have learned from around the world, create their own solutions, and then work directly with an elementary school to help make education in Japan more engaging. We can’t wait to see their lesson in action!
