【国際コース】　子どもたちに家事の大切さを伝えよう　～中央児童会館での特別イベント～

　国際コースでは、生徒たちが地域社会について学び、自分たちのコミュニティや世界をより良くするために何ができるかを考えます。

　今年、あるグループの生徒たちが取り組んだテーマは「家事と育児」です。調べていく中で、日本では家事や育児のほとんどを女性が担っていること、そして同時に、日本は先進国の中でも働くお母さんの割合が特に高い国の一つであることがわかりました。そこで生徒たちは、子どもたちが家事の大切さを楽しく学び、自分も家でお手伝いをしたいと思えるようなゲームを考案しました。

　先週、クラークの生徒たちは中央児童会館を訪れ、50人以上の小学生と一緒に「家事チャレンジ」ゲームを行いました。部屋の一角では食器洗いの練習、別の場所ではTシャツのたたみ方、そしてもう一か所ではお買い物ごっこが行われました。これだけ多くの活動を同時に進めるのは大変そうに思えますが、クラークの生徒たちの丁寧な準備と、小学生への温かい接し方のおかげで、すべてがスムーズに進みました。

　イベントが終わり、クラークの生徒たちが児童会館を後にしようとしたとき、スタッフの方々や子どもたちが開いた窓から「さようなら！」と声をかけてくれました。「またすぐに来てね！」という声もたくさん聞こえました。素晴らしいイベントになっただけでなく、国際コースと中央児童会館の間に、これからも続いていく素敵なつながりが生まれた一日となりました。

In the International Course, students learn about their local community and think about how to make both their community and the world a better place. This year, one group of students chose to explore the topic of housework and childcare. They discovered that in Japan, most housework and childcare is done by women — even though Japan has one of the highest rates of working mothers among developed nations. So they decided to create a fun set of games to help young children understand the importance of housework and feel more motivated to help out at home.

Last week, this group of Clark students visited the Chuo Children’s Recreation Center and played their “Housework Challenge” game with over 50 elementary school students. In one corner of the room, children practiced washing dishes. In another, they learned how to fold t-shirts. In another, they role-played going grocery shopping. Running all of these activities at the same time sounds very challenging, but thanks to the Clark students’ careful planning and their kind and friendly attitude toward the younger children, everything went smoothly.

As the Clark students walked away from the recreation center at the end of the event, the staff and children shouted goodbye from the open windows. Many of them called out, “Please come back again soon!” It was a wonderful event — and the beginning of what will hopefully be a lasting friendship between the International Course and the Chuo Children’s Recreation Center.
