【3学年】Adam先生による英語コミュニケーションⅢ「習熟度S」
クラーク国際では生徒が主体的・協働的に学ぶことができる授業を展開しています。また、午前中の「英語コミュニケーション」の習熟度別授業は、ネイティブ教員も担当しています。今回は一番上の習熟度クラスを受け持つカナダ出身のアダム先生が3年生と行った、「宇宙をテーマにした授業」をご紹介します。
An English lesson that is out of this world
In our English communication class, we have the opportunity to explore unique themes. Today we were ambitious and shot for the stars. I was over the moon to see the students challenge themselves by learning about the universe and space themed idioms.
英語コミュニケーションのクラスでは、ユニークなテーマを探究する機会があります。今日は野心に燃えて、高い目標に向かいました。宇宙や宇宙をテーマにした慣用句を学ぶことで、生徒たちが自分たちに挑戦しているのを見て、私は大喜びでした。
Immense immeasurable size of the universe
We covered idioms that native English speakers use daily, though this wasn’t rocket science, it was new to them. The difficulty was presenting examples, to demonstrate that they understand the meanings, and that they know how to use them. We watched short videos that show the immense immeasurable size of the universe.
ネイティブスピーカーが日常的に使うイディオムを取り上げました。ロケット・サイエンス（（理解するのが非常に難しいもの）ではありませんでしたが、多くの生徒にとって初めて見る表現でした。難しかったのは、意味を理解し、その使い方を知っていることを示すために、例文を提示することでした。私たちは宇宙の計り知れない大きさを示す短いビデオを見ました。
Laniakea Supercluster
For some, this was possibly their first chance to see this majestic reality of Laniakea (Hawaiian-immeasurable heaven). The students worked in groups to read, listen, and test their knowledge of the cosmos. We count 3, 2, 1, and they reveal the colored card that corresponds with the multiple-choice answers.
ラニアケア（ハワイ語で計り知れない天国）という壮大な現実を目にする初めての機会となった生徒もいたでしょう。生徒たちはグループに分かれて、本を読み、話を聞き、宇宙についての知識を確かめました。私たちは3、2、1と数え、生徒たちは選択式の答えに対応する色のカードを見せます。
Expanding awareness and learning useful idioms
They learned where the measurement of time came from, and how the names of the days of the week are in fact the planets. We looked at, and learned what exactly you see, in a starry night sky. This is an exciting lesson, where we learn a lot, expand our awareness, and learn useful idioms.
時間の計測がどこから来たのかや、曜日の名前が実は惑星であることを学びました。夜空に輝く星々を見上げるとき、実際に私たちは何を見ているのでしょうか。多くのことを学び、意識を広げ、さらに英語の便利な慣用句を学べる、ワクワクする授業でした。
