A Talk from a US Diplomat

On August 27, a diplomat from the US Embassy visited our school to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of America. The guest speaker, Ms. Sunshine Ison, shared a bit about her work as a diplomat and discussed some traditions in the US. She talked about quilt-making and how it has been passed down through generations, not only in America as a whole but also within her family as well.
How the US weaves its history, values, and culture into the fabric

She told the story of her grandmother’s sister, who was separated at birth, and how her grandmother told her story through her quilts. Passing down handmade quilts is not only for practicality, but it showcases how the US weaves its history, values, and culture into the fabric.
A different version of America
It was a good and informative session for the students to learn more about cultures different from their own. It also showed a different version of America, one that values family, tradition, and their own country.
Hot topics in current affairs
In the end, some students asked questions in English to the guest speaker, which varied from why she became a diplomat to current issues and events between America and Japan. All in all, I believe that students went home with a deeper sense of understanding of what America is all about.
